Jorge de Ovando is a Mexican architect licensed in the United States whose work spans residential, hospitality, institutional, and civic projects across North America, Africa, and the Middle East.

He began his career in Mexico, where he joined Legorreta and spent nearly eight years contributing to projects that ranged from private residences and hotels to educational and cultural institutions. During this time, he evolved from an early communications role into design leadership, developing an appreciation for architecture as a cultural expression—one capable of creating atmosphere, memory, and a strong sense of place. Working alongside multidisciplinary teams also reinforced the importance of collaboration, precision, and the careful development of ideas from concept to execution.

Seeking to expand the theoretical and experimental dimensions of his practice, Jorge later pursued a Master of Architecture degree at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles. There, under the influence of architects including Eric Owen Moss and Thom Mayne, architecture became less about style and more about inquiry. Design was approached as a process of research, experimentation, and spatial narrative, where form emerged from a clear architectural idea rather than from formal expression alone. This experience profoundly shaped his belief that architecture should challenge conventions while remaining intellectually rigorous.

His professional journey continued in Chicago, where he contributed to complex institutional, civic, and large-scale public projects. Working within highly coordinated multidisciplinary teams deepened his understanding of technical execution, project management, and the discipline required to translate ambitious concepts into buildings capable of enduring the realities of construction. Rather than limiting creativity, this experience reinforced the idea that technical rigor is what ultimately gives architectural ideas permanence.

Throughout his career, international work has continuously expanded his perspective. Leading the design of a university campus in Arusha, Tanzania, collaborating on projects across the Middle East, and working in diverse cultural contexts reinforced the belief that meaningful architecture cannot be separated from the people, traditions, climates, and landscapes that shape it. Each place demands its own response, and every project begins by listening before proposing.

Today, JDO Studio brings together these experiences into a practice that moves fluidly between conceptual exploration and technical precision. The studio embraces architecture as both cultural expression and disciplined craft—creating spaces that are rooted in context, driven by clear ideas, and designed to leave a lasting impact on the people who inhabit them.
